DefinitionSubject–Verb Agreement means the verb must agree with the subject in number (singular/plural) and person.

Basic Rules


1. Singular Subject → Singular Verb


If the subject is singular, the verb is also singular. āϝāĻĻāĻŋ Subject āĻāĻ•āĻŦāϚāύ āĻšāϝāĻŧ, Verb āĻ“ āĻāĻ•āĻŦāϚāύ āĻšāϝāĻŧāĨ¤


Ex: He plays cricket. She writes a letter.


2. Plural Subject → Plural Verb


If the subject is plural, the verb is plural. āϝāĻĻāĻŋ Subject āĻŦāĻšā§āĻŦāϚāύ āĻšāϝāĻŧ, Verb āĻ“ āĻŦāĻšā§āĻŦāϚāύ āĻšāϝāĻŧāĨ¤


Ex: 1. They play cricket. 2. We write letters.


3. Two Subjects joined by ‘and’ → Plural Verb


When two subjects are joined by ‘and’, the verb is plural. āϝ⧇āϤāĻŋāϝāĻŧāĻž āĻĻ⧁āϟāĻž Subject ‘and’ ⧰⧇ āĻœā§‹ā§°āĻž āĻĨāĻžāϕ⧇, Verb āĻŦāĻšā§āĻŦāϚāύ āĻšāϝāĻŧāĨ¤


Ex: Ram and Shyam are friends. Tea and coffee are popular drinks.


4. Each / Every + Singular Subject → Singular Verb


Each and Every always take a singular verb. Each āφ⧰⧁ Every āĻŦā§āĻ¯ā§ąāĻšāĻžā§° āϕ⧰āĻŋāϞ⧇ āϏāĻĻāĻžāϝāĻŧ āĻāĻ•āĻŦāϚāύ Verb āĻšāϝāĻŧāĨ¤


Ex: Each boy is present. Every student has a book.


5. Collective Noun (as one unit) → Singular Verb


When a collective noun is treated as one unit, use a singular verb. Collective noun āĻ• āϝāĻĻāĻŋ āĻāϟāĻž āĻāĻ•āĻ• āĻšāĻŋāϚāĻžāĻĒ⧇ āϧ⧰āĻž āĻšāϝāĻŧ, Verb āĻāĻ•āĻŦāϚāύ āĻšāϝāĻŧāĨ¤


Ex: The team is winning. The class is silent.
