The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), India’s longest sea bridge, is scheduled to be inaugurated on January 12. Spanning 22 kilometers, it connects Sewri in south Mumbai to Chirle in the outskirts of Navi Mumbai, crossing over Thane Creek. Originally planned to be completed in 4.5 years, the project experienced an eight-month delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The MTHL is expected to greatly reduce travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, enhancing connectivity and easing congestion.
On January 1, 2024, Gujarat set a Guinness World Record for the largest number of people performing Surya Namaskar simultaneously at 108 different venues, with over 50,000 participants. This remarkable achievement was celebrated as a significant cultural milestone. The event, which featured a state-wide competition, included a major gathering at the iconic Modhera Sun Temple in Mehsana district. The initiative was overseen by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and received praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who highlighted the cultural importance of the number 108 in Indian tradition.
The high-level committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind was set up to examine the feasibility of holding simultaneous elections in India. This concept involves conducting elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies together, aiming to streamline the election process and reduce costs. The committee has been actively consulting on this proposal, which has garnered support. The government is working on a roadmap to enable synchronized two-phase Lok Sabha and assembly polls starting from 2024.
The Nikshay Poshan Yojana (NPY), introduced by the government in April 2018, aims to provide financial assistance to tuberculosis (TB) patients for their nutritional needs. The scheme offers ₹500 per month as a direct benefit transfer (DBT) to TB patients. This support is intended to help them purchase food and maintain a nutritious diet during their TB treatment, addressing undernutrition, which is a significant risk factor for TB.
