Multiply any number by 6…
Trick to Multiply Any Number by 6
- Divide the number by 2 (take half).
- Add the first digit of the number to the result.
- Attach the last digit of the number at the end.
General Formula:
For any number XY (where X is the first digit and Y is the last digit): 6 × XY = (XY/2 + X)Y
This trick works for even numbers because they are divisible by 2. For odd numbers, the pattern might not hold perfectly.
Ex:
- 6 × 12 → (12 ÷ 2 + 1)2 = 72
- 6 × 24 → (24 ÷ 2 + 2)4 = 144
- 6 × 28 → (28 ÷ 2 + 2)8 = 168
Works for even numbers.
Multiplying a number by 6 follows these steps:
- Take half of the other number.
- Add the first digit of the other number to the half.
- Append the last digit of the other number at the end.
Few more examples:
Ex 1: 6 × 36
- Half of 36 - 36/2 = 18
- Add the first digit (3) - 18 + 3 = 21
- Join the last digit (6) → 216
Ans: 6 × 36 = 216
Ex 2: 6 × 42
- Half of 42 - 42/2 = 21
- Add the first digit (4) - 21 + 4 = 25
- Append the last digit (2) - 252
Ans : 6 × 42 = 252
Ex 3: 6 × 56
- Half of 56 - 56/2 = 28
- Add the first digit (5) - 28 + 5 = 33
- Append the last digit (6) - 336
Ans : 6 × 56 = 336 (Correct)
