What is an irregular verb ?
An irregular verb is a verb that does not follow the usual rules for forming its past tense and past participle.
Regular verb:
- Add -ed to form the past tense.
- Example:
walk → walked
play → played
Irregular verb:
- The past tense and past participle change unpredictably (no fixed rule).
- Examples:
- go → went → gone
- eat → ate → eaten
- take → took → taken
- see → saw → seen
Why are they called “irregular” ?
Because they don’t follow the "regular" -ed rule, so you have to memorize their forms individually.
