Age Problems 1 : Tricks
Q. Ram is 10 years older than Shyam. If Ram is 40 years old, what is Shyam's age?
(a) 30 years (b) 12 years (c) 35 years (d) 20 years
Soln.
Ram’s age = 40 years
Ram is 10 years older than Shyam.
So, Shyam’s age = 40 − 10 = 30 years
Given:
Brother’s age = 12 years
Sister is 4 years younger ⇒ subtract 4
12−4 = 8
Ans: (c) 8 years
Q. The sum of mother's and son's ages is 50. If mother is 30 years older than son, what is son's age ?
(a) 8 years (b) 10 years (c) 12 years (d) 15 years
Given:
Let the son’s age = x
Then the mother’s age = x + 30
According to the question,
X + (x + 30) = 50
2x + 30 =50
2x=20
x=10
Son’s age = 10 years
Ans: (b) 10 years
Q. A man is 60 years old at present. What will be his age after 12 years ?
(a) 72 years (b) 65 years (c) 68 years (d) 80 years
Given:
Present age = 60 years
After 12 years → add 12
60 + 12 = 72
Ans: (a) 72 years
Q. The father's age is three times the son's age. If father's age is 45 years, what is the son's age ?
(a) 12 years (b) 15 years (c) 18 years (d) 20 years
Given:
Father’s age = 45 years
Father’s age = 3 × Son’s age
Son’s age = 45/3 = 15
Ans: (b) 15 years
Q. The father's age is five times the son's age. If father's age is 90 years, what is the son's age ?
(a) 12 years
(b) 15 years
(c) 18 years
(d) 20 years
Soln.
Father’s age = 5 × Son’s age
⇒ 90 = 5 × Son’s age
⇒ Son’s age = 90 ÷ 5 = 18 years
Q. Ram is 5 years older than Shyam. If Ram is 20 years old, what is Shyam's age ?
(a) 10 years
(b) 12 years
(c)15 years
(d) 18 years
Soln.
Ram is 5 years older than Shyam.
So, Shyam’s age = Ram’s age − 5 = 20 − 5 = 15 years
Q. Ram is 10 years older than Shyam. If Ram is 40 years old, what is Shyam's age ?
(a) 30 years (b) 12 years (c) 35 years (d) 20 years
Given:
Ram is 10 years older than Shyam.
Ram’s age = 40 years
So,
Shyam’s age = 40−10 =30
Ans: (a) 30 years
Q1. The present ages of A and B are 30 and 25 years respectively. What will be the age of A after 7 years ?
Options: (a) 32 (b) 35 (c) 37 (d) 40
Ans: (c) 37
Explanation: After t years, age of A = present age + t → 30 + 7 = 37 years. Age difference is not needed for this simple “after t years” problem.
Q. 5 years ago, the ages of P and Q were 20 and 16 years. What is their current age?
Options: (a) 24, 20 (b) 25, 21 (c) 25, 20 (d) 26, 21
Ans: (b) 25, 21
Explanation: Current age = age t years ago + t → P = 20 + 5 = 25, Q = 16 + 5 = 21. Difference remains constant = 4 years.
Q. The age difference between A and B is 6 years. If A is currently 24 years old, what is B’s age?
Options: (a) 18 (b) 20 (c) 21 (d) 22
Ans: (a) 18
Explanation: Age difference = 6 → B = A − difference = 24 − 6 = 18. Difference remains constant always.
Q. Ages of A and B are 40 and 34 years. What was B’s age 10 years ago ?
Options: (a) 24 (b) 26 (c) 28 (d) 30
Ans: (c) 24
Explanation: Age t years ago = present age − t → 34 − 10 = 24. Age difference = 6 (constant).
Quick Tip for Exams:
- Step 1: Always find the age difference.
- Step 2: Use formula:
- After t years: Age = x + t
- t years ago: Age = x − t
- Step 3: Solve equations quickly for “twice/half age” questions.
