How to Identify Active & Passive Voice

Use these points to identify the voice of a sentence.

1. Active Voice

In Active Voice, the subject performs the action.

Structure: Subject + Verb + Object

Example: Rita cleans the room.

  • Subject: Rita : Verb: cleans : Object: the room

Here Rita is doing the action, so it is Active Voice.

2. Passive Voice

In Passive Voice, the action is done to the subject.

Structure: Object + Helping Verb + V3 (Past Participle) + by + Subject

Example: The room is cleaned by Rita.

  • Subject: The room : Helping verb: is : V3: cleaned : Agent: Rita

Here the room receives the action, so it is Passive Voice.

Important Note

  • If the subject does the work → Active Voice

  • If the work is done to the subject → Passive Voice
