1. What are Articles ?

Articles are words used before nouns. They show whether the noun is general or specific.

Article হৈছে সেই শব্দ যি noun (নামপদ) ৰ আগত ব্যৱহাৰ হয়। ই সাধাৰণ (general) নে নিৰ্দিষ্ট (specific) বস্তু/ব্যক্তি বুজায়।

1. Article: A

Rule:

• "A" is used before singular countable nouns that begin with a consonant sound.


• "A" ব্যৱহাৰ কৰা হয় একবচন গণনাযোগ্য নামপদৰ আগত, যেতিয়া শব্দটো consonant sound ৰে আৰম্ভ হয়।

Examples : a boy → এজন ল’ৰা, a pen → এটা কলম,  dog → এটা কুকুৰ, a book → এখন কিতাপ

Special Examples : a university, a European country

Reason (কাৰণ): University আৰু European শব্দ “yu” sound ৰে আৰম্ভ হয়। সেয়েহে A ব্যৱহাৰ হয়।

2. Article: AN

Rule :

• "An" is used before singular countable nouns that begin with a vowel sound.


• "An" ব্যৱহাৰ কৰা হয় vowel sound ৰে আৰম্ভ হোৱা একবচন গণনাযোগ্য নামপদৰ আগত।

Examples: an apple → এটা আপেল, an egg → এটা ডিম, an orange → এটা কমলা

Special Examples : an hour, an honest man

Reason (কাৰণ): Hour আৰু honest শব্দত h silent, সেয়েহে শব্দটো vowel sound ৰে আৰম্ভ হয়।

3. ARTICLE: THE

Rule :

• "The" is used for a specific person, place, or thing that both the speaker and listener know about.


• "The" ব্যৱহাৰ কৰা হয় নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি, স্থান বা বস্তু বুজাবলৈ, যাক কথা কোৱা আৰু শুনা দুয়ো জানে।

Examples : the sun → সূৰ্য, the moon → চন্দ্ৰ, the book on the table → টেবুলৰ ওপৰৰ কিতাপ, the teacher → সেই শিক্ষক

Important Point: Articles depend on sound, not spelling. : Article ব্যৱহাৰ spelling নহয়, sound অনুসাৰে হয়।

Example

1. a university : Correct, an university : Wrong

Reason: “University” begins with the /yu/ sound (a consonant sound). So we use A, not AN.

কাৰণ: “University” শব্দটো /yu/ ধ্বনিৰে আৰম্ভ হয়, যি consonant sound। সেয়ে A ব্যৱহাৰ হয়।

Example: She studies at a university. : তাই এখন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ত অধ্যয়ন কৰে।

2. an hour : Correct, a hour : Wrong

Reason: In “hour”, the H is silent, so the word begins with a vowel sound. Therefore we use AN.

কাৰণ: “Hour” শব্দত H silent, সেয়ে শব্দটো vowel sound ৰে আৰম্ভ হয়। সেয়ে AN ব্যৱহাৰ হয়।

Example: I waited for an hour. : মই এঘণ্টা অপেক্ষা কৰিছিলোঁ।

Important Rule : Articles depend on sound, not spelling. : Article ব্যৱহাৰ spelling নহয়, sound অনুসাৰে হয়।
