Articles (A, An, The)

It is important to note that the use of “A” and “An” depends on sound, not spelling; for example, a university is correct because it starts with a “yu” sound, and an hour is correct because the “h” is silent. On the other hand, “The” is the definite article and is used for specific or known nouns; it is used when referring to something particular, something already mentioned, or something unique, such as the sun, the moon, or the Taj Mahal. For example, in the sentence I saw a dog. The dog was barking, “a dog” refers to any dog, while “the dog” refers to a specific one. In short, “A” and “An” are used for general meaning, whereas “The” is used for specific meaning.
