One winter day, a curious boy named Raju found a piece of ice. He wondered, “What will happen if I touch it with my tongue ?” As soon as his tongue touched the ice, he felt a strong cold sensation—and suddenly, it stuck! Raju got scared and asked his teacher, “Why did this happen ?” The teacher smiled and explained, “Ice is much colder than your body. When it touches your tongue, it quickly takes away heat.” Raju listened carefully.

The teacher continued, “Your tongue always has moisture (water). When the ice touches it, the heat leaves your tongue and goes into the ice.” “Because of this sudden cooling, the moisture on your tongue freezes instantly and forms a thin layer of ice.”

Raju said, “Oh! That frozen layer makes it stick!” “Exactly,” said the teacher. “That’s why ice sticks to your tongue for a short time.”
