Type 14: Average Speed with Stops
Q. A bus travels at a speed of 54 km/h without stopping and at an average speed of 45 km/h when it makes stops. How many minutes does the bus stop per hour ?
Formula:
Speed with stops = Running Speed × Running Time / Running Time + Stopping Time
Solution:
Running speed = 54 km/h
Average speed with stops = 45 km/h
Let the bus run for t hours and stop for s hours.
45 = 54t / t + s
45(t + s) = 54t
45t + 45s = 54t
45s = 9t
s = t/s
For 1 hour:
s = 1/5 hours
=1/5 × 60 = 12 minutes
Ans: 12 minutes per hour
