Type 15: Two Trains Moving Towards Each Other (Opposite Direction)

Q. Two trains of lengths 120 m and 80 m are moving towards each other at speeds of 40 km/h and 50 km/h, respectively. How much time will they take to completely cross each other ?

Formula:

Time = Length of Train1 + Length of Train2 / Relative Speed

For opposite directions: Relative Speed = V1+V2

Solution:

Train 1 length = 120 m
Train 2 length = 80 m

Train 1 speed = 40 km/h
Train 2 speed = 50 km/h

Total length: 120 + 80 = 200 m

Relative speed: 40 + 50 = 90 km/h

Convert into m/s: 90 × 5/18 = 25 m/s

Therefore, T = 200/25 = 8 seconds

Ans: 8 seconds
