Place Value and Face Value
1. What is a Digit ?
The symbols from 0 to 9 are called digits.
Digits: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
We use these digits to make different numbers.
Example: 25 is made using the digits 2 and 5.
2. What is Face Value ?
The face value of a digit is its own value.
Ex: 47
- Face value of 4 = 4
- Face value of 7 = 7
Face value does not depend on the position of the digit.
3. What is Place Value ?
The place value of a digit is its value according to its position in a number.
Ex: 47
- 4 is in the tens place → Place value = 40
- 7 is in the ones place → Place value = 7
Therefore: 47 = 40 + 7
4. Ones and Tens
- In a two-digit number:
- Rightmost digit = Ones
- Digit to its left = Tens
Example: 63
- 6 is in the tens place → Place value = 60
- 3 is in the ones place → Place value = 3
- Therefore: 63 = 60 + 3
5. Hundreds – Three-Digit Numbers
- In a three-digit number:
- Rightmost digit = Ones
- Middle digit = Tens
- Leftmost digit = Hundreds
Ex: 245
- 2 is in the hundreds place → Place value = 200
- 4 is in the tens place → Place value = 40
- 5 is in the ones place → Place value = 5
Therefore: 245 = 200 + 40 + 5
Note:
- Face Value: The digit's own value.
- Place Value: The value of a digit according to its position.
Ex: 63
- Face value of 6 = 6
- Place value of 6 = 60
