Charley believes that there are three levels at Grand Central Station, not just two. He tells a psychiatrist friend about this strange experience. The psychiatrist says that it is a dream or imagination caused by stress. He thinks Charley wants to escape from the modern world full of fear and insecurity. Charley agrees that modern life is full of fear, war, and worry. But he says everyone wants escape, not like his strange experience. Charley is an ordinary 31-year-old man who works late. One night, he travels through Grand Central Station to go home to his wife. He often gets lost inside Grand Central Station because of its confusing tunnels and corridors. One day, he enters a strange corridor that goes downward and leads him to a mysterious place. Charley reaches the third level of Grand Central Station, which looks old and different. He sees gaslights, old furniture, and people dressed in 1890s clothing. He finds a newspaper from 1894 and realizes he has gone back in time
Charley wants to buy tickets for Galesburg in 1894, a peaceful and happy place.The clerk refuses his modern money, and Charley realizes something is wrong. Charley returns to the present world and cannot find the third level again. His friend Sam disappears, and Charley believes Sam has gone to the past. Charley finds a letter from 1894 showing that Sam is living happily in the past. At the end, Charley learns that Sam was actually his psychiatrist, suggesting everything may be imagination.
